Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Ruling at a Glance:
Material:
Alternating red/white at a minimum
2" high with each color length no less than 6" and no greater than
18". All material must have a DOT certification mark to verify compliance
to FMVSS 108.
Side
of trailer: Red/white
material placed 15" to 60" above road or as closed as practicable. Can
be placed on or above rail to avoid rivets. Segments can be non-continuous, but
must be evenly distributed and cover at least 50% of the sides.
Rear
of trailer: Red/white across full
width of the door or bumper 15" to 60" above road or as close as
practicable. (Marking is not required on underride bar for retrofit.) Two
2" x 12" white strips configured as an inverted "L" in each
upper rear corner.
